Stone Temple Pilots formed in the late 1980s with the original band name Mighty Joe Young. Gigging around San Diego, the band built a local audience before entering the studio to record their debut album. Forced to change their name for legal reasons, they latched onto the STP motor oil brand and eventually decided to flesh the initials out as Stone Temple Pilots. They continued their vehicle theme with a tire wing logo.
